Two women who previously reached a settlement regarding sexual harassment allegations levied against disgraced Fox News host Bill O’Reilly are jumping onboard a defamation lawsuit against O’Reilly and the network.
Andrea Mackris and Rebecca Gomez Diamond allege that following their settlements, O’Reilly and Fox painted a cruel picture of them, essentially reducing them to liars and opportunists in public statements and on-air in attempts to discredit their stories.
The smear campaign is yet another chapter in Fox News’ despicable history of sexual harassment and workplace inequality. Former network head Roger Ailes ultimately fell due to the credible allegations from more than half a dozen different women that he sexually harassed them.
Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox Host who helped bring Ailes down, described the impact of her experience at Fox News, which purportedly incubated a toxic culture of masculine self-regard and privilege that provided cover for sexual predators: “It’s almost as if all of your self-esteem and confidence drips away slowly. It drains down from your body. You can be the strongest woman in the entire world, but you feel so alone.”
In a particularly bizarre and arrogant display earlier this year, O’Reilly said that he was “mad at God” over the allegations. For adhering to a political philosophy that espouses personal accountability, it appears as if the far-right blowhard has difficulty taking responsibility for his own actions.
