Buzzed is reporting that the RNC has directed its staff to hold on to documents from last year’s election.
While RNC lawyers explained that the move is “precautionary,” this news nonetheless shows the extent of the ongoing Russia probe spearheaded by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
An RNC memo from July 28 reads:
Given the important role that the RNC plays in national elections and the potentially expansive scope of the inquiries and investigations, it is possible that we will be contacted with requests for information
Earlier in July, Mueller’s team instructed Trump officials to retain documents connected to Trump Jr.’s infamous meeting last year with a Russian lawyer promising government-supplied dirt on Hillary Clinton.
As the scope of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election expands, there has been increased speculation that Trump is maneuvering to oust Mueller. The flailing president has initiated a bizarre war of words against his Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was one of Trump’s earliest and most politically legitimate supporters.
Trump’s discontent with Sessions stems from the Alabama conservative’s recusal from overseeing the Russia probe. By alienating Sessions and attempting to engineer his departure as Attorney General, Trump may be looking to install a loyalist who would help scuttle the investigation by firing Mueller.
