Developments pertaining to the Trump Administration’s ongoing scandals have been emerging at breakneck speed.
The latest? The Russian lawyer involved in the now infamous 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. represented Russia’s top intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB). The FSB is a direct descendent of the Soviet Union’s KGB.
Vladimir Putin himself was a KGB agent, and also served as the head of the FSB before ascending to power as Russia’s autocratic leader. Much of Russia’s kleptocracy consists of individuals either formally or currently involved in Russian intelligence.
As Reuters reports, Natalia Veselnitskaya represented a military unit affiliated with the FSB, representing the agency’s interests during a legal battle over property rights. Her services on behalf of the agency lasted between 2005 and 2013.
Veselnitskaya took part in a meeting during the summer of 2016 with Donald Trump Jr., then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and top Trump aid and son-in-law Jared Kushner. In a series of emails, Trump Jr. indicated that he was interested in receiving dirt on Hillary Clinton – an offer passed on to the president’s son by Trump associate Rob Goldstone. After this news broke, Veselnitskaya denied having any connections with the Russian government.
That assertion, evidently, was a lie.
