Conservative Iowa House Representative Steve King has never concealed his virulently racist and nativist viewpoints. He’s claimed that “Western” Americans (read: white) are more productive than others. He’s tweeted an image of a beer as a “toast” to celebrate ICE deporting a DREAMer who should have been protected by federal law. He’s stated that “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies,” in an apparent reference to non-white children of immigrants.
His ethno-nationalism is as repugnant as it is contradictory to the very foundations of the United States. Of course, that has not stopped racists of his ilk form ascending to power. A hate-monger currently occupies the White House, having gained power through diminutive proclamations on all variety of demographics.
While Trump’s grand policy promises (including the border wall, itself a manifestation of nativist fantasy) have been bogged down by his administration’s blossoming scandals, there has been concern among the far-right that these pipe dreams will never come true.
King, of course, has an idea for making them a reality.
When asked on CNN if he was comfortable spending US taxpayer money on the wall, King responded:
Absolutely yes…I’d throw another $5 billion on the pile, and I would find half of a billion of dollars of that right out of Planned Parenthood’s budget. And the rest of it could come out of food stamps and the entitlements that are being spread out for people who have not worked in three generations.
While Republicans strive to rip health care from the neediest in order to produce a tax break for the rich, the idea of eliminating the working poor’s ability to afford food in order to fund a wall that would fix absolutely nothing seems like the plot of some nefarious super villain from a comic book. But it’s not – it’s merely another example of the modern GOP’s distorted, craven, and wicked agenda.
