Donald Trump held a public meeting featuring his entire cabinet Monday. It was quite bizarre.
While public cabinet meetings are inherently a PR event, this one in particular featured Trump giving floor time for each individual at the table to openly praise him.
Vice President Mike Pense remarked that it is the “greatest privilege of my life to serve as vice president to a president who’s keeping his word to the American people.” Former RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and current chief of staff (for the time-being, at least) told Trump “we thank you for the opportunity and blessing to serve your agenda.”
The stunt felt more North Korea than United States. Then again, Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung-Un both have a tenuous connection to reality and need to constantly reaffirm their legitimacy by aggrandizing themselves, even if it requires outright falsehoods.
At least one US politician came up with a fitting response to Trump’s agitprop display. Senator Check Schumer’s office gathered around a table to offer their praise of the senator’s accomplishments…and looks. They could keep straight faces for about half a minute, before one aid offered praise echoing Priebus’ absurd remarks. Then they lost it.
GREAT meeting today with the best staff in the history of the world!!! pic.twitter.com/ocE1xhEAac
