In a bizarre display of either willful contempt for US national security or a hallmark example of his extraordinary incompetence, Trump allegedly informed Russian officials – including the Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov – of highly classified information pertaining to threats from ISIS.
The bombshell story was dropped by Washington Post late Monday, and comes on the heels of a tumultuous week that has led the Trump Administration on what GOP Senator Bob Corker has called “a downward spiral.” Last week, Trump came clean regarding his rationale for firing former FBI Director James Comey, citing the Russia investigation in an interview with Lester Holt. This threw his entire administration under the bus, as they were caught up in the web of thinly veiled lies they peddled to the public.
A host of other troubling outbursts – such as his public threats to Sally Yates and Comey – have rounded out a head-spinning slew of incidents that do not bode well for the flailing president, whose approval numbers are reaching historical lows.
Yesterday’s report adds perhaps the most damning evidence yet that Trump is either sabotaging US interests, or is simply unfit to hold office. In a boast to Russian officials, Trump allegedly bragged, “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day.” He divulged secrets that were so closely guarded that they were kept from many of the US’ closest allies in order to safeguard the information’s procurement methods and the nation’s identity that provided it
As countless of intelligence professionals have pointed out, this threatens the stability of vital relationships – including those with Middle Eastern countries with operatives embedded in ISIS – ultimately threatening US security in a very concrete and pressing way and putting lives at risk. According to the report, Trump even had the audacity to share the city where the threat was detected – which gives away both nation providing the intelligence and could lead to the deaths of the human personnel who made the discovery possible.
The biggest question facing the nation right now is how much will it take for congressional Republicans to act? This administration has been a complete train wreck. If the GOP waits too long to intervene, whatever calamities Trump goes on to cause will be on the party.
