After weeks of stubborn refusal to recuse himself from the ongoing congressional investigation into the Trump Administration’s Russia ties, Rep. Devin Nunes has “temporarily” stepped aside from the inquiry, blaming “leftwing activists” for filing ethics charges against him.
Nunes came under fire from Democrats as well as high-profile Republicans for his handling of the investigation. The embattled Republican virtually leapt into hot water by regurgitating mishandled classified information passed on from Trump aids in an effort to validate Trump’s baseless claim that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower (the revealed information, of course, did not actually validate this claim).
The entire situation was further complicated by Nunes’ initial insistence that the details were given to him by whistleblower outside of the White House. The source, it turns out, consisted of Ezra Cohen-Watnick and Michael Ellis, Trump insiders. This revelation severely compromised Nunes’ ability to lead an independent inquiry into the Trump Administration, when by all accounts he has been actively engaged in damage control on behalf of the flailing White House.
