It seems that with each passing week, the nation discovers another suspicious bit of information relating to Trump’s Russian ties. The latest bombshell, of course, was the revelation that Jeff Sessions lied under oath during his confirmation hearing for attorney general, where he said he had no contacts with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign. It turns out that he did – two meetings with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.
Trump’s entire inner-network, it seems, has some connection to Russian businesses or the Russian political elite, which is known for its brutality under the leadership of former KGB agent Vladimir Putin. The fact has already been established that the intelligence services of various European countries – including those in the Netherlands and Britain – informed US officials of multiple meetings between Russian contacts and close confidants of then-candidate Trump.
While no “smoking gun” has emerged yet, various alarming – if not entirely substantiated – claims have emerged from the international intelligence community indicating that there may be greater cooperation between team Trump and Russia than is currently known.
A security specialist and former NSA counterintelligence officer named John Schindler threw fresh fuel on the fire on Tuesday, when he published the following tweet:
Learned fm very reliable IC sources that Trump WH, w/help fm Russian intel, is targeting US journalists. Rough road ahead. Get ready, peeps
— John Schindler (@20committee) March 7, 2017
This is – for the record – an assertion broadcasted on Twitter, which is home to an uncountable multitude of misleading and false statements. Schindler, however, isn’t your run-of-the-mill troll. If various elements within the larger intelligence community are passing around this kind of information and it turns out to have any substantiating material behind it, this could throw Washington into disarray and dampen the prospects of a full tenure for the Trump Administration.
