Shocking footage from Indonesia has shown what activists claim are starved sun bears begging for food.
The Bandung Zoo has a shady past when it comes to animal rights. Recently, zoo personnel gravely abused an elephant that went on to die from its injuries. Members of the Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group – an Indonesian animal rights group – took footage of the zoo’s sun bear exhibit in order to broadcast the establishment’s ongoing abuse of animals.
Warning: video may contain images that some viewers find distressing.
Marison Guciano – an activist with the Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group – discussed the nature of the Bandung Zoo and the fate it should ultimately meet:
[The Bandung Zoo] is one of the worst zoos in all of Indonesia. Maybe it would be best if this place was closed down now, before more animals die a painful and avoidable death.
An online petition to do just that has surpassed 200,000 signatures. Sun bears – which the International Union for Conservation of Nature designate as vulnerable – certainly deserve far better treatment.
