In a dark sign of what lies ahead in the Trump era, the Ohio legislature has passed the most restrictive anti-choice law in the nation. The law effectively bans abortion six weeks out from contraception. Now, all that remains for this rigidly patriarchal restriction to take place is a signature from the state’s supposedly moderate governor, John Kasich.
The “heartbeat bill” is based on the fact that a fetus’ heart is detectable 6 weeks after conception. Many women, however, do not even know they’re pregnant at this juncture, meaning that this colossal waste of government time and resources is being spent to effectively outlaw abortion.
As Planned Parenthood said in a statement: “This bill could take away a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions before she would have known she had a decision to make.”
While two similiar bills have been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, many anti-choice fanatics expect the incoming Trump Administration to appoint a rigidly anti-choice judge to fulfill Antonin Scalia’s vacant seat, which has remained empty as Republicans stonewalled Obama from fulfilling his presidential duty in an embarrassing display reveailing how Republicans effectively derail the basic functions of government in order to justify their extreme, anti-government agenda.
Impact Tap will continue to cover the assault on women’s rights, as well as the resistance that advocates, activists, and pro-social politicians put up to the draconian strictures of Trump’s quasi-fascist order.
