I Refuse. There Can Be No Unification in Trump's America

I Refuse. NO to Unification in Trump’s Name.

You don’t get to run a campaign like Trump’s and then expect unification.

Yet that is precisely what is being asking of the nation by the biggest figures in the progressive camp.

Following the election, Obama appealed to our national identity:

We have to remember that we’re actually all on one team…We’re not Democrats first, we’re not Republicans first, we are Americans first. We’re patriots first. We all want what’s best for this country.

But this “maturity” is self-defeating. Enumerating the ways that Donald appealed to division on his path to the White House would be redundant. He essentially didn’t have a platform outside of wildly unrealistic appeals for “the wall,” or pandering cries for registries of entire religious groups (the establishment of which apparently has a frightening amount of support among the newly radicalized Republican party).

This wasn’t a political ideology. It was a fusion of scattershot, bigoted outbursts that amount to nothing but the ego of a narcissistic individual.

Furthermore, considering Republican stubbornness over the past 8 years, the call for unification seems especially unwarranted. As of this writing, there have been 247 days since Obama’s nomination of Merrick B Garland to the Supreme Court. Congressional Republicans have taken the unprecedented step of blocking the president from executing one of his most basic functions, citing an imaginary “Biden Rule,” based on Democrats’ unrealized threats of a similar tactic years ago.

For all the dismissiveness of conservatives in the wake of the election – calling millennials cry-babies as Piers Morgan has done – the conservative movement, in the modern era, has been squarely based on lashing out whenever its most extreme members don’t get what they want. The volatile television personality about to move into the White House, after all, was willing to torpedo any legitimacy of the electoral process … until it turned out in his favor.

Donald’s very political rise began in the vile race-baiting of birtherism. Now the first black president will hand over the keys to this man.

The polite language of elite liberals is disingenuous. Women’s health, minority rights, and freedom of speech are under siege. We will not compromise. Asking to unify around a de-unifier is ridiculous. The battle starts now.
